Pre-Primary Program
(Ages 3 to 6 years)
At this stage, children are extremely attracted to our beautiful Montessori materials. They become absorbed in the study of numbers, the mathematical operations, letters, words and their meanings, and the use of writing instruments to express their thoughts, both pictorially and through the written word. They become interested in cultural studies, including geography, art and music. Nature study continues to fascinate these children and they begin to classify the plants and animals they see. Computers add to and reinforce all of these areas of study.
With the language materials, children learn about letters and words phonetically. Children’s literature is an important part of the language program as well, with attractive reading areas created which encourage children to enjoy books. By learning phonics, our students have the tools to become lifelong readers and writers, at their own developmental level.
The Math Materials are often what visitors to a Montessori classroom are impressed with the most. Teachers present mathematical concepts to children in such a concrete, hands-on manner, that many parents find themselves saying, “Why didn’t they have this when I was young?” Because they touch and see groupings of items, children are able to comprehend numeration, fractions and even algebraic concepts in their most basic sense. The abstraction of these concepts will be so much easier for them in the future, because they have experienced a concrete, three-dimensional foundation at an early age.
