Curriculum Enrichments

Elementary String Ensemble, Orchestra and Upper Elementary Band

We have developed an outstanding Music Department under the guidance of Xiomara Flo Orue.  Miss Xiomara has taken students to National Piano Guild Auditions & to Orchestra, Band NY State Music Association Festivals prior to joining us at Summit.  We now have a flourishing Elementary Orchestra, String Ensemble and Upper Elementary Band.  Music instruction is held twice a week to start the day, for those students who participate, to help maximize uninterrupted work cycles.  The String Ensemble, Orchestra and Band perform at the Holiday Program and the Spring Recital.  The String Ensemble has additional performances throughout the year at our school-wide events.

General Music

In addition to the music in the classroom, all students 4 yrs old-6th grade receive music education.  The class consists of singing, tone matching, music reading, rhythm activities, music appreciation and musical performance.  Students use instruments to enhance songs learned from a variety of genres and cultures.

Art

In addition to the art area in the classroom, Kindergarten – 6th Grade students receive formal art class weekly.  Several media are used to nurture creativity through painting, collage, drawing, watercolor, mixed media and much more.  Students learn the styles and techniques of famous artists and gain appreciation for various art forms.

Foreign Language

All students pre-primary (age 3)- 6th Grade receive Spanish lessons weekly. It is an interactive process where the language is heard & repeated, objects are named and simple commands are followed.  The program is outlined in units which contain basic conversation pattern, vocabulary categories, pronunciation practices and songs.

Fitness

In addition to their daily outdoor playtime, the primary children have Fitness weekly and use incline mats, climbing apparatus, parachutes and a variety of other equipment to develop large muscle coordination. 

In addition to daily outdoor recess time alternating with each elementary class for social interaction, Elementary students have fitness twice a week.  These students engage in interactive sports, games and exercises in a process that builds self esteem, confidence, strength and endurance. 

Computers

Computer classes start for children in Kindergarten.  Students enjoy building upon basic skills as they progress through elementary.  Class is held in the computer lab and additional computers are available in the elementary classrooms.

Gardening

An important part of the curriculum for Toddlers-6th Grade is gardening.  Children have gardening every other week, where they grow flowers, vegetables and fruit trees, learn about the ecosystem we live in and develop a respect and love for nature.  The gardens and gardening lessons are available to the classrooms at all times.

Library

Students Toddler – 6th grade have Library time.  Toddlers and Pre-Primary enjoy story time and learning about the library. Pre-Primary – 6th Graders may check out books and learn the importance of caring for library property.  Elementary students develop their library research skills and literature enrichment.
