Sea Camp!! Important Info!!
Dear Upper Elementary Parents and Students,
Plans are being confirmed for Sea Camp. We are all getting very excited! Our trip is April 2 – April 4 … LESS THAN ONE WEEK from now! The information below will give you all the details you need to get prepared. If you have further questions, please feel free to contact us.
Travel
WEDNESDAY: Students need to arrive to school at REGULAR TIME, with everything READY TO GO! PLEASE DO NOT BE LATE! This will give us time to load the bus, and take care of last minute details, and have a prompt 9:00 AM departure. Students should pack a completely disposable lunch and some extra snacks (preferably non-messy items such as nuts, raisins, fruit-roll-ups, etc.) to eat on the way. (See packing list.) We will stop at a rest stop for a picnic lunch, and to stretch as needed. We will arrive at Sea Camp after lunch.
FRIDAY: We will leave Sea Camp after lunch, then stop for a fast food dinner along the way home. (The students do NOT need money for this.) We will return to school at approximately 6:00 or 6:30 PM on Friday. When we are about 30 – 40 minutes away from school on Friday night, we will start a phone chain to let parents know that we are nearby. Before we leave, we will be asking you which phone number you would like to have called to let you know we are almost home.
If your child would like to bring a book or a SMALL electronic toy / CD player with headphones for the bus, that would be fine. ONLY games / music that are rated “E for Everyone” and / or have NO “Parental Advisory” are permitted. All electronics will be collected and stored while we are there. Please be sure it has your child’s name on it.
Medical Needs / Emergency Contact Info
It would be a good idea to confirm that your child’s school Emergency Card and Authorization for Medical Treatment form are up to date, with correct phone numbers. Please make sure that any updates are done by April 1st.
If your child needs any medications while on the trip (prescription or over-the-counter), you will need to fill out a “Medication Authorization Form” which you can get from the teachers, and give the medication to the teachers before the trip. To avoid delaying our departure, PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT THE TEACHERS HAVE YOUR CHILD’S MEDICATIONS (AND SIGNED AUTHORIZATION FORMS) BY TUESDAY, APRIL 1st. Note that students are not allowed to carry any medication with them – all medications – INCLUDING OVER THE COUNTER - must be held by staff. (Please consider including “as needed” medications that your child is likely to need also – such as Dramamine, Tylenol, cough drops, etc. On the form, you can indicate ‘as needed’, and we will log if / when it was given for your records.)
Phone Calls
Sea Camp’s phone numbers are: (305) 872-2331 and (800) 660-7322. If you need to contact us while we are there, please call one of those numbers, and they can get a message to us. The teachers will also call school regularly, so the office will know our status throughout the trip.
Students will have the opportunity to call home during meals / free time. Please send a pre-paid calling card (yes, we will help them to use it!) or a cell phone with your child so that they can call you. (See rules sheet for information about cell phones.)
Packing List
We suggest that you pack the following items. PLEASE put your child’s name on everything!
· a daily change of clothes (shorts, t-shirts, underwear, socks, etc.) and a couple of sweatshirts for the evenings – also, bring a few extra of each item in case of cold or wetness
· mask, fins, snorkel if you have them, or they may be rented (see below)
· a wet suit if you have one, or it may be rented (see below)
· a pair of old sneakers or surf shoes (NOT FLIP-FLOPS – they MUST have a back) for wading
· ANOTHER pair of sneakers or sturdy sandals for land wear
· sleepwear – both girls and boys may have to walk to another building for restrooms and showers, so a pair of sandals / flip-flops for trips to the bath house, would be helpful
· swimsuit – a one-piece suit is STRONGLY recommended for girls
· raincoat and a light jacket
· sleeping bag (or twin bed linens) AND a pillow
· 1 bath towel, 1 washcloth, 1 hand towel, 1-2 beach towel(s)
· toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, shampoo, soap, deodorant, etc.)
· lightweight flashlight
· sunscreen – waterproof, with high SPF, and a sun-hat if desired
· bug spray
· several large plastic bags for packing wet gear
· a completely disposable lunch, and some extra snacks for the bus ride
· a pre-paid calling card or a cell phone [See rules sheet for information about phone calls!]
Snorkel Gear / Wet Suits
If your child does not have his / her own snorkel gear, it may be rented from Sea Camp for a flat rate of $10. Although wet suits will probably not be needed, they may also be rented for $10. If your child needs snorkel gear or a wet suit, we will MUST ORDER THEM BY ON MONDAY – please see the enclosed sheet for information.
Money Needed
The only money that your child will need to bring will be for any souvenirs from the Sea Camp store. We suggest that $20 - $25 will be plenty. We discourage bringing more money than necessary (or any other valuables). Students are responsible for keeping their own spending money.
————————————————————-
On Monday, we will send home a list of the specific programs and activities that we will be doing while we are there. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us. Thanks!
